Journey to Rap City feels less like a debut EP and more like an arrival. Produced by DJ Azuhl and voiced by Saarah The Lyrical Activist, this project carries relatable tales of life, rebirth, struggle and becoming — songs rooted in lived experience rather than performance.
What makes this release compelling is how it functions as both introduction and testimony. Saarah opens a window into who she is as a Cape Town-based independent Rap Artist, Author and Performer, with lyricism shaped by reflection, resistance and purpose. There’s vulnerability here, but also conviction.
The production provides a soulful, grounded backdrop for stories that move between personal narrative and wider social consciousness. Journey to Rap City documents an artist finding voice, sharpening identity and mapping a journey in real time.

The 7785 Remix by DJ Azuhl reimagines that reflection through a different lens. Leaning into a more radio-ready, accessible aesthetic, this version reshapes the original with smoother transitions, polished textures, and a wider sonic appeal. The remix maintains the essence of K.O’s introspection while positioning the track within a space that connects effortlessly with both core hip hop listeners and broader audiences.

Part of Azuhl’s ongoing remix philosophy, the 7785 treatment isn’t just about reworking a track—it’s about preserving the DNA of South African hip hop while reshaping it for a different listening experience.

Taken from the seminal Skeletsleutel (2005), this track captures a pivotal chapter in South African hip hop history. Released through High Voltage, the album stands as a benchmark in Afrikaans rap for its sharp lyricism, daring production and cultural weight. I contributed scratches across the full project and concept input on selected songs, making this release deeply personal. The track also appears on my debut African Shockwave Vol. 1 with Grenville Williams.

Originally released in 2016 via Cape Town imprint Stereotype Records, this collaboration between Lance Theron and Candice Thornton gets a striking reinterpretation.
Where the original leaned into high-energy club territory, this remix takes a different path entirely — slowing things down into a more melancholic, introspective space. The BPM drop allows the emotion in Candice Thornton’s vocals to breathe, drifting over textured layers, subtle rhythms, and a mood that feels both distant and deeply immersive.
It’s less about the dancefloor rush and more about the after-hours reflection — a version that lingers, unfolds, and pulls you inward with every listen.

The Beat Bangaz, a pioneering South African DJ collective, made history through their groundbreaking collaboration with Hype Magazine, helping elevate DJ culture within the local hip hop landscape.

With the release of Nokia Hype Sessions Vol. 10: A Beat Bangaz Mixtape Special, included as a free CD in the 14th issue (August 2007), the crew introduced one of the first mixed-format mixtapes to accompany a major print publication in South Africa. Expertly mastered by D Mongs, the project showcased a seamless blend of turntablism, selection, and musical storytelling—bringing the authentic essence of DJ culture directly to readers.

This historic moment marked a shift in how DJs were perceived within SA hip hop. No longer confined to the background, The Beat Bangaz—featuring DJ Ready D, DJ E20, DJ Azuhl —helped position DJing as a central, standalone art form within the culture.
By bridging the gap between mixtape culture and music media, they not only amplified their own legacy but also opened doors for future DJs to be recognized beyond the club and radio spaces.

Today, that same commitment to preserving and evolving the craft continues through the Beat Bangaz DJ Academy in Cape Town, where the next generation is being shaped with a deep respect for hip hop’s foundational elements.

Teba – 20-5-2-1 Manifesto is the powerful 2004 debut solo album from Gugulethu-born reggae and dancehall voice Teba Shumba — also known as The Original Social Worker. Released via High Voltage Entertainment (VOLT 004), the project stands as a defining moment in South African roots music, blending reggae, soul, and dancehall into a sound both grounded and forward-looking. This track also features on the DJ Azuhl release 'African Shockwave Vol 1' with Grenville Williams.

Emerging from his earlier work with Skeem and contributions to the Yizo Yizo soundtrack, Teba steps fully into his own lane here — delivering music that is as conscious as it is soulful. His signature use of isiXhosa alongside English gives the album a distinct local identity while amplifying its global message.

20-5-2-1 Manifesto is rooted in themes of social justice, township realities, and Rastafarian consciousness, speaking directly to the lived experiences of post-apartheid South Africa — often referred to as “Azania” within the culture. Tracks like “Revolution” capture the spirit of resistance and reflection, positioning Teba not just as an artist, but as a voice for the people.

More than a debut, this album is a statement — a manifesto of purpose, culture, and consciousness that continues to resonate across generations.

A Side Breaks Vol. 10 continues the series’ deep dive into DJ-driven rhythm tools, keeping the spirit of the bboy and bgirl cypher front and center. Built from rugged drums, raw breakbeats, and stripped-back grooves, this one is crafted not just for the mix — but for the floor.
Each volume carries its own tone, and Vol. 10 pushes that intent further — flipping textures, swing, and rhythm patterns to challenge timing, footwork, and musical interpretation. Familiar break traditions meet unexpected turns, creating tension, release, and those real-time moments where DJs and dancers feed off each other.
